Giant Love Song, a tender, autobiographical account of a family losing their mother to cancer. A bevy of aunts bearing morphine and wine try impossibly to manage the six sisters and two brothers who, each by each invent their own narratives in order to face this loss. They are all pulled toward a turning point that will re-shape how they love, the ways they need each other and at the core, deepen how they are family.

It has been a long time since reading a book that captured my attention the way this one did.
I was pulled in from the first page and looked forward to every moment I could open it back up and keep reading.
I fell in love with young Maureen the same way I fell in love with Scout the first time I read To Kill a Mockingbird. Just like in Mockingbird, I felt completely transported to another place and time, and felt connected to the characters in a way that can only be achieved through truly inspired writing. -Shannon Terhune

Now, understand, Maureen is my cousin by marriage; but even if I didn’t know her, I would love this book. It wasn’t an easy read right now, because I have other family members dealing with cancer and young children, but Maureen’s story telling reaches beyond just the story of a young girl, living with a mother who is dying of cancer. I love that she is fierce young girl, who becomes a strong young woman….finding her father along the way.

Daydreams and memories
help this teenage girl cope with the feelings and grief for the passing of her mother from breast cancer. I laughed out loud at the shenanigans of the Muldoons and the neighbor kids and cried over the insights and beautiful story telling.

Whether your childhood years were similar to or different from Maureen Muldoon’s, this book will take you back to memories from your own formative years. Her style plucks at the heartstrings of every human emotion and will leave you laughing out loud at one moment and reaching for a tissue the next.

This was a wonderful and flowing read! The story spoke to me on so many levels – taking me back to my own childhood and sparking memories I thought were long gone. The writing is truly lyrical and poetic, yet somehow manages to be completely down-to-earth and as real as if the author were sitting at the table talking over a warm cup of tea. Please read this story – your world will not be as bright without it.

This book captures the reader’s imagination because it so vividly and creatively captures the imagination of a deeply feeling and curious girl growing up in the 70s. Maureen does a masterful job of making you feel as though you are not only in her younger, wonder-filled head, but you are relating to your own adolescent struggle to mature and make your way in the world. As someone who grew up in that era, all of the songs and pop culture threads she wove in made my personal connection to this story even stronger, not to mention, fun!

Spending a few hours with Maureen and her raucous, funny, heart-breaking family was a pleasure I never wanted to end. Of course, the more authentic and specific a writer is, the more we read ourselves onto each page.. Every person on her front stoop, every aunt, every sibling, every neighbor, priest, and teacher is alive in all the painful beauty of real people in a devastating situation. While it’s ostensibly about a mom’s death, it’s really about the ways that we connect, heal, and love each other back into emotional and spiritual health. I love this book so much. My dog and cat kept coming over to see what was making me laugh out loud one moment, and why I was sobbing the next.

We need books like this, now more than ever!

This story captures the imagination, the heart, the soul of the reader. It is like reading “Cheaper by the Dozen” with the windows cleared up so we could really see what is happening. It is funny, poignant, and heartbreaking. A beautiful love story of a creative, amazing, and large family as they slowly face the cancer that is killing their mother. The author is a magical seamstress of words and creates a path so vivid, you will think you are there.
