Now, understand, Maureen is my cousin by marriage; but even if I didn’t know her, I would love this book. It wasn’t an easy read right now, because I have other family members dealing with cancer and young children, but Maureen’s story telling reaches beyond just the story of a young girl, living with a mother who is dying of cancer. I love that she is fierce young girl, who becomes a strong young woman….finding her father along the way.

Spending a few hours with Maureen and her raucous, funny, heart-breaking family was a pleasure I never wanted to end. Of course, the more authentic and specific a writer is, the more we read ourselves onto each page.. Every person on her front stoop, every aunt, every sibling, every neighbor, priest, and teacher is alive in all the painful beauty of real people in a devastating situation. While it’s ostensibly about a mom’s death, it’s really about the ways that we connect, heal, and love each other back into emotional and spiritual health. I love this book so much. My dog and cat kept coming over to see what was making me laugh out loud one moment, and why I was sobbing the next.

We need books like this, now more than ever!
